Australian Cameron Percy has further advanced his cause for a 2010 USPGA Tour card by finishing runner up to Tom Gillis at the Nationwide Tour Players Cup in West Virginia.
Percy put together a final round of 68 at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport to share second position with Roger Tambellini, three shots behind Gillis. A bogey at the last was a disappointing way to end what was another very good week for the Victorian but the US$52,800 he earns moves him to 4th position on the Nationwide Tour money list. He is now perhaps only US$45,000 away from the money he needs to have to his name to ensure PGA Tour status in 2010.
The winner, Gillis, previously competed on the PGA Tour but has played the Nationwide Tour in recent times. It was the first victory on either the Nationwide or PGA Tours for the 40-year-old and advances his cause for a return to the PGA Tour in 2010. With this victory he moved from 108th on the money list to 10th.
The next best of the Australasians was Won Joon Lee, who faltered with a final round 77 after being very much in contention heading into the final day. Lee made a good start to his final round with two early birdies but was finally brought undone by a double bogey and bogey late in his round. Still there were some good positive signs for Lee after what has been a disappointing year to date.
Phil Tataurangi and Alistair Presnell finished 34th, Grant Waite, David McKenzie, Andrew Buckle and Scott Gardiner were 40th, Stuart Deane 46th and Bradley Iles 59th.
The Nationwide Tour will now take a one week break before the Ford Wayne Gretsky Classic in Canada.
