A second round 67 at the Sahalee Players Championship in Seattle has placed Daniel Nisbet in a tie for second, a stroke behind current leader Canadian Nick Taylor.
Nisbet opened the front nine at the Sahalee Country Club, which played host to the 1998 PGA Championship, with an impressive 4-under-par 32 and backed that up with a closing 2-under-par 35 to finish at 4-under-par to move up twenty places on the leaderboard. Nisbet’s score was the lowest round on day two, an honour that he shared with Chan Kim who also fired a 67.
Yesterday Nisbet had an opening 1-over-par, 73 to be the best placed Australian in a tie for 21st and six strokes behind first round leader Jake Koppenberg, who closed the day with a bogey free 5-under par 67.
Koppenberg was unable to repeat his opening round efforts today, carding a second round 3-over-par 75 to allow 2007 Canadian Amateur Champion Nick Taylor to take the lead after the R&A World number 1 recorded rounds of 69-70 to be currently at 5-under-par.
A fortnight ago, Taylor shot a 5-under 65 in the second round at Bethpage Black, matching the best score by an amateur in US Open history and started today’s second round in a tie for 3rd position at 3-under-par, two strokes behind Koppenberg.
Matt Giles, runner-up in this event last year, struggled with a 7-over-par 79 on day one but rebounded today with a second round 1-over-par 73 to be equal 41st.
The schedule at the Sahalee Players has both the second and third rounds combined with no cut and the final round being played tomorrow.
This is Nisbet’s second Sahalee Players Championship, the Queenlander finished in a creditable tie for 24th position here last year.
