Krywulycz secures top-25 at Dogwood

Augusta State based collegiate player Mitch Krywulycz has secured his 4th top-25 finish from five starts on the US amateur circuit this summer after firing rounds of 71-71-73-68 to finish at 5-under-par in a tie for 18th at the Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.

American Brian Harman won the championship with an 18-under-par total for a four stroke margin over fellow American, Russell Henley.

Harman was the 2003 US Junior Champion and was instrumental in the US victories at the 2005 Walker Cup and 2007 Palmer Cup teams and in 2005 won the prestigious Players Amateur.

A fortnight ago Harman finished runner-up at the Sunnehanna Amateur and today the world number 23 claimed his third major US amateur title with precision play around the Druid Hills layout following rounds of 73-67-64-66.

The Dogwood was another solid tournament for Krywulycz, who qualified for the final stage of the US Open last month. The signs of posting four consecutive rounds in a tournament are there, yet the 21-year-old knows he has to improve on his consistency.

“Throughout the summer my consistency has been holding me back,” said Krywulycz this evening.

“I know the good shots are out there and I just need to focus upon minimising the compounding mistakes. I’m excited about meeting up with the Aussie boys at the Players this week. It’s great to see your mates over here and hopefully one of us can go one better than what Matt Jager did last year.”

Krywulycz, a winner of the Australian Schoolboys Championship, has played an instrumental part this season in the Augusta State golf team in his second year in the US collegiate system. This included a second place finish in NCAA East Regional in Chattanooga, Tennessee and towards securing a place for Augusta State in the NCAA Championships.

The Sydney born Krywulycz will also be one of only a handful of Australians attempting to qualify this year for the US Amateur along with Matt Jager, Jason Scrivener, Brendan Smith and another US collegiate based golfer, Matt Giles.

Ray Beaufils was the other Australian in the field at the Dogwood this year and after opening with an 80 had his work cut out and failed to make the cut of top-40 and ties.
