Chalmers leads US Bank Championship

BY Bruce Young | US PGA Tour | 2009 US Bank Championship | Round Two | 18 Jul 2009

Greg Chalmers leads the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee at the halfway mark after rounds of 64 and 67 have him two ahead of Chris Riley, Jeff Klauk and Kris Blanks.

Interestingly, Chalmers made a horror start to the tournament when he bogeyed his opening two holes in round one but he would go on to record eight further birdies in his round of 64 to lead after day one. He added four further birdies and a bogey in his round of 67 today to retain his lead.

Chalmers, who has never won an event on either the PGA or Nationwide Tours, is back on the PGA Tour in 2009 following a fine season on the Nationwide Tour last year. He finished 4th at the Puerto Rico Open earlier this season and has been putting together several good rounds of late without threatening to win.  This starts provides the 35 year old West Australian with a great opportunity.

Fellow West Australian Stephen Leaney, playing on a major medical exemption in 2009, is the next best Australian in 14th position at 4 under, Steve Elkington 31st, Mark Hensby and Matt Jones 45th, Nick O’Hern and Aron Price 55th and Peter Lonard just inside the cutline in 65th position.
