Jones trails Ishikawa at Sun Chlorella

BY Bruce Young | Japan Tour | 2009 Sun Chlorella Classic | Round Two | 31 Jul 2009

Australian Brendan Jones is well placed after the second round of the Sun Chlorella tournament at the Otaru Country Club in Hokaido, Japan.

Jones added a second round of 70 to his opening round of 66 and at 8 under he trails 17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa by three and Kazuhiro Yamashita by two. Taigen Tsumugari is 3rd at 9 under and Jones alone in 4th place.

Ishikawa won his third Japan Golf Tour event two starts ago at the Gateway to the Open Mizuno Open and last week produced a strong weekend finish at the nearby Sega Sammy Cup to finish 10th. Prior to those finishes his season in 2009 had not been particularly good although it must be remembered that he is still only 17 years of age.

Neither Yamashita or Tsumugari have won on the Japan Golf Tour to date.

Jones, currently in 5th position on the 2009 Japan Golf Tour money list, won this event in 2003 when played at the Sapporo Bay Golf Club.

New Zealand’s David Smail, the leading Australasian in 4th position on this season’s Japan Golf Tour money list, is in a group of players at 5 under and in a share of 5th position.

Steven Jeffress at 1 under, Steve Conran at 1 over and Craig Parry at 2 over were the only other Australasians to make the cut.
