Marc Leishman still alive at Royal Birkdale

Marc Leishman was the only Australian to make it through to the Match Play phase of the British Amateur Championship when he qualified in 17th place with rounds of 73 and 70. Yesterday Leishman made it through his first round encounter when beating England’s Lloyd Campbell, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, at the 18th hole.
By qualifying in 17th position, Leishman earned a bye in the first round and as a result of that and his win yesterday, he advances to round three and into the final 32 where he will play Nigel Edwards over the famed Royal Birkdale layout in Southport in Lancashire. Welshman Edwards qualified on the same score as Leishman and was a member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup sides in 2001 and 2003.
Amongst other Australasians attempting to qualify for the match play over the Royal Birkdale and Southport and Ainsdale courses there were some disappointments. Ashley Hal missed by one shot, David Lutterus and Jamie Arnold by two, Michael Sim by four, Tristan Lambert and New Zealander Mark Smith by five, and John Ayoub by six. Australian Amateur Champion, Scotland’s Eric Ramsay, missed the cut off by one shot.
The final will be played over thirty six holes on Sunday June 5th. The defending champion Stuart Wilson was eliminated in the first round having only just qualified for the Match Play.
