Fred Funk has cruised to victory at the 2009 US Senior Open by a massive six shots over Joey Sindelar following four superb rounds in the 60’s at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Indiana.
Funk, who seven days ago lost a playoff to Loren Roberts at Sunningdale, took a one shot lead over Sindelar and Greg Norman into today’s final round and by the turn he had established such a lead that it became a case of who would finish second. It was a stunning display by the 53-year-old Funk who in taking the title won his fifth Champions Tour event, adding to the eight PGA Tour titles he has to his name.
51-year-old Sindelar was left in the winner’s wake but it was nonetheless a very impressive week and his best on the Champions Tour.
Norman, as he had done last week faltered in the final round but he did recover after what had been a poor start to the final day. Two over for the day through ten holes, he made ground with three birdies in the next five holes although a bogey at the last cost him a share of third with Russ Cochran.
Norman finished in a share of 4th with Loren Roberts, who produced a final round of 64.
Pre-tournament favourite Bernhard Langer finished 22nd.
Graham Banister was the only other Australian in the field and did well to make the cut before finishing well back.
