Boland fires at US Amateur

A phenomenal 5 under back nine has Julia Boland in the mix for medallist honours at the US Amateur being played in St Louis, Missouri.

Boland sits at even par 71, three shots back from the leader Amy Anderson and in a tie for 7th.

It was a typical gutsy effort from the girl from Tamworth in country NSW. After an outward nine of 5 over 40, Boland knew she had some work to do if she was to make the top 64 qualifiers for the matchplay.

She came home superbly with five birdies on the Old Warson course and is obviously in a confident mood after winning the Trans Amateur just two weeks ago in Tennessee.

Her travelling partner Stacey Keating also put in a solid effort and is currently tied 33rd on 3 over 74.

A doubly bogey on the 384m par four 16th cost the Victorian but with the experience of playing in last year’s amateur, she knows what will be required tomorrow.

Australia’s third entrant, Leanne Bowditch is in a tie for 77th spot after an inconsistent round today.

The brother of former Nationwide Tour Player, Steven Bowditch started poorly with consecutive bogeys. Despite two birdies she finished on 6 over 77.

After tomorrow’s stroke round, the top 64 will advance to the match play, which concludes with a 36 hole final for amateur golf’s most prestigious trophy on Sunday.
