Scott, Ogilvy join Norman at Aussie Open

Australasian PGA Tour | 2009 Australian Open | General | 05 Aug 2009

The Australian Open looks set to be the most competitive in more than a decade with Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley, John Senden and Greg Chalmers all confirming their appearance to play in the Championship at the NSW Golf Club in Sydney from December 3-6.

Ogilvy, the current world number eight, will head Australia’s international players in the star-studded field alongside Australian legend Greg Norman who continues his good form having finished in a tie for fourth place at the US Senior Open at the weekend.

Adam Scott will also join Ogilvy, with his form continuing to improve as he  seeks to return to the heights of his World Number Three ranking in mid-2007.

While Ogilvy, Norman and Scott form an impressive triumvirate in the high-profile stakes, they face a battle against the depth of home-grown talent contending for the 94th Australian Open.

Speaking from the United States, Ogilvy said “I am looking forward to returning to Sydney in my quest to win the Australian Open. It’s great to have Greg playing again as he adds so much to the championship. NSW Golf club will certainly test the players with the strong ocean breezes.”

There are now 11 Australians in the world’s Top 100 and Golf Australia CEO Stephen Pitt says this will give the Australian Open incredible depth and added excitement for the fans.

Mr Pitt said it again proved that the hottest talents in Australian golf wanted to compete at their national open.

“We are committed to having our best Australian golfers play at New South Wales Golf Club on the stunning cliffs at La Perouse.”

At the weekend’s Buick Open, Greg Chalmers and John Senden took the fight up to  Tiger Woods as both finished in a tie for second place and both have committed to return for the Australian Open in December.
