Mixed day for Aussies at US Amateur

Two Australians remain in the hunt at the US Amateur being played at the Old Warson Country Club in St Loius Missouri.

Victoria’s Stacey Keating and Queenslander Leanne Bowditch are through to the round of 32 while Boland is out, being beaten 3 & 1 by Illinois’ Brooke Beeler.

Keating scored a confidence boosting 5 & 4 win over California’s Kristen Park while Bowditch played solidly to defeat Canada’s Sara Maude Juneau 2 & 1.

Although she was behind at the start Bowditch had regained control of the match and led 1 up at the turn.

A birdie at the 143m par 3 13th saw Bowditch leap to two ahead and she was able to play steady golf at the back of the game to take the match.

22-year-old Keating played brilliant golf and was 3 under in her match against Park, never giving the Californian a chance.

She now meets Canada’s Maude-Aimee Le Blanc who is running into some form with an upset win over the tournament’s 8th seed Kimberley Kim.

Bowditch now meets Cyna Marie Rodriquez from the Philippines who won her match on the 19th.

For Julia Boland it was day where she just couldn’t get it going. Despite the match being all square after eight, a bogey on the ninth and a double on the 13th meant it was always going to be hard for the 23-year-old to pull the match out of the woods.

The big upset of the day was the loss of number one seed Danielle Kang who lost 2 & 1 to Florida’s Amelia Lewis, while drawcard and 24th seed, Cheyenne Woods lost 2 & 1 to Candace Schepperle.

Two rounds will be played tomorrow and if both Keating and Bowditch continue to advance are drawn to play each other in the semi finals.
