Vijay to play Australian PGA

Australasian PGA Tour | 2009 Australian PGA Championship | General | 28 Aug 2009

When it comes to world class golfers, Vijay Singh is a name synonymous with success.  The good news for Aussie golf fans is that the three time Major Champion is the next big name to have signed on to play the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola from December 10-13.

Singh, the current world number 13 will return to Australian shores for the first time since he was part of the victorious International Team that claimed the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in 1998.

Winner of 34 USPGA TOUR events and with a further 22 international victories to his name, the 46 year old Fijian widely known for his incredible work ethic will line up at the PGA of Australia’s flagship event for the very first time.

“Vijay is a world class player and will be a major drawcard for Australian fans who have not had the opportunity to see him play here before,” said Max Garske, CEO of the PGA of Australia.

“It’s obviously been a while since he played an Australasian Tour event in Australia so the fact that we have been able to secure him for the final event of the season is a major coup and we couldn’t be happier.”

A former world number one and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Singh has had several visits Down Under over his illustrious career. In addition to his Presidents Cup appearance (which saw him line up as a team mate alongside Greg Norman, Steve Elkington, Stuart Appleby and Craig Parry),  Singh also contested the 1997 Johnnie Walker Classic at Hope Island and was tied seventh at the 1997 Holden Australian Open held at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne.

“It’s been a long time since I played in Australia and I am so excited to have been asked to play the Australian PGA Championship,” said Singh. “I have always intended to return to Australian shores and when I got the offer to play, I jumped at the chance.”

Singh’s inclusion in the field comes hot on the heels of the announcements that defending champion Geoff Ogilvy will also be returning to the Sunshine Coast event, as will crowd favourite John Daly.

The 2009 Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola is the final event on the Australasian Tour and OneAsia Super Series calendars for 2009. It will be played at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast from December 10-13.

Tickets for the 2009 Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola go on sale from October 6th . Tickets can be purchased by calling the PGA Hotline on 1800 009 499.
