17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa has the halfway lead at the Fujisankei Classic, ensuring a huge crowd for the weekend at the event west of Tokyo. Ishikawa has brought golf fans in Japan back to the game in the last eighteen months or so as, in him, they see the emergence of a world class player.
Ishikawa’s second round of 65 moved him from his overnight share of 4th to a one shot lead over Kenichi Kuboya as the he looks for his fifth win on the Japan Golf Tour and his third this season.
Ishikawa, who last week finished third at the Hana V Cup in Fukuoka, stormed home with three birdies in his last four holes today to move ahead of the 37-year-old Kuboya, a four time winner on the Japan Golf Tour.
The leading Australasian after 36 holes is Steve Conran who, after a great start to the season, has struggled for the past few months. He is at 1 under and in 13th position, Craig Parry is 18th, Nathan Uebergang, Paul Sheehan and Brendan Jones are at 3 over while New Zealander Eddie Lee just made the cut at 4 over.
