Successive Interstate wins for Victoria

The Victorian Men’s interstate team have made it two from two after winning the 2009 Interstate Series at the Peninsula Country Club in Victoria.

The defending title holders were undefeated in the series securing all five contests and accumulating 39 matches for a 8 1/2 winning margin over South Australia. New South Wales made a spirited late charge in the series to finish in third position with 2 wins and 27 1/2 matches, after defeating Western Australia in today’s final round, 7&4, and accounting for Tasmania, 7&4, yesterday.

Queensland ended the series in fourth position with 26 matches, followed by Tasmania with 22 matches and Western Australia on the bottom of the ladder with 20 matches.

Victoria enjoyed a commanding six match overnight lead from South Australia and had held the lead since Monday’s opening round. The “recovery sessions” each evening with a quick dip into Port Phillip Bay, producing the results for the Victorians.

Victoria set up their second interstate title after winning all seven of this morning’s singles matches over Tasmania. Daniel Beckmann ended the series undefeated, winning his morning singles match 2&1 from Tasmania’s, Craig Hancock.

In the other Victorian matches, Bryden Macpherson accounted for Ryan McCarthy, 2&1, in the top order match, whilst Luke Bleumink, playing number 3 for the Victorian side, won his match 2&1 over Kalem Richardson. Kieran Pratt, who was playing in this first Interstate series, was too strong for Greg Longmore, winning his match 6&5, Ashley Umbers accounted for John Cassidy, 3&1. Craig Hasthorpe won his match against Mark Schulze, 3&2, while Victoria’s number 6 and Interstate rookie, Rory Bourke, secured a 1-up win over James Pike. Terry Vogel playing number 7 for Victoria, won his match 3&2 over Daniel Spiers.

In the remaining morning single encounters, South Australia’s Jordan Sherratt scored an impressive win over Daniel Nisbet, 2-up, whilst Western Australia’s Jason Scrivener just pipped Brendan Smith from New South Wales, 1-up.

Matt Jager and Michael Raseta squared their match, whilst Michael Smyth at Number 3 for NSW won his match over Shaun Malone, 3&2.

Smyth, like Beckmann, was the only other player to finished the series undefeated.

The afternoon foursome matches produced some interesting results, with Michael Smyth and Brendan Smith from New South Wales halving their match with the Western Australian pairing of Matt Jager and Jason Scrivener.

Queensland’s Daniel Nisbet and Tim Hart scored a 1-up victory over South Australia’s Max McCardle and Jordan Sherratt, whilst Daniel Beckmann and Luke Bleumink playing Victoria’s number 2 pair, won their match over John Cassidy and Craig Hancock from Tasmania.

The Victorians also took out the Colts teams matches, defeating New South Wales by a single contest, whilst Queensland finished third.
