Rory McIlroy shares the lead with fellow Northern Irishman Michael Hoey and Scotland’s Richie Ramsey after 36 holes of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Fifeshire, Scotland.
The 20 year old McIlroy added a superb second round of 65 at St Andrews to follow his opening round of 68 at Carnoustie yesterday. Ramsey recorded a round of 66 at St Andrews and Hoey also a 66 at Carnoustie and at 11 under the trio has a one shot lead over Simon Dyson, Mikko Ilonen, Alistair Forsyth and Ross McGowan.
Ilonen produced the round of the day with his 64 at St Andrews, a round which included a double bogey at the par four 2nd hole.
The tournament is being played in a Pro-Am format over three courses in Fifeshire, namely St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie.
South Australian Wade Ormsby, struggling for survival on the European Tour, leads the Australasians after he added a round of 66 at Kingsbarns to move into a share of 11th position. Ormsby is currently in 178th position on the European Tour money list in 2009 and a big week in this lucrative event would make a significant difference to his chances or retaining status in Europe for 2010. With only perhaps four more events for which he will be eligible in 2009 Ormsby still needs perhaps €200,000 to be within the top 115 players who will retain status.
Brett Rumford is in 33rd position at 5 under, Scott Hend 49th, Richard Green 64th, David Gleeson 77th, with Ashley Hall, Adam Crawford, Scott Strange, Kane Webber and Chris Gaunt the next best all in 100th position.
The cut will be made after the third round tomorrow.
The leading team in the Pro Amateur event is that of Australian Scott Strange and former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh. A second round of 68 at Kingsbarns by the pair has them at 21 under and one ahead.
