Jager set for record finish at Federal

In a virtual repeat of his opening nine at last year’s Federal Amateur, Matt Jager has moved on the field with an opening 4-under-par, 32, to be at 12-under-par at the turn for a three stroke lead over nearest rival, Luke Bleumink.

Jager, the defending champion, then proceeded to birdie the 10th to widen his margin to four and is on course to better the tournament equalling record he set last year at 13-under-par.

Overnight leaders Tim Hart and Craig Hancock have fallen off the pace, whilst Brendan Smith is one behind Bleumink in a tie for 3rd at 8-under.

During yesterday’s third round, Jager fired a 6-under-par 66 to setup his defence of his title in a peerless display of golf.

Heading into the Federal Amateur the world number 10 had remarked that he was looking to regain some form after a disappointing US tour.

The tournament again looks set to be a happy hunting ground for Jager and should he be again holding the trophy this afternoon, it will be not only a timely win for Australia’s highest ranked player, but one that’s richly deserved.
