Campbell, Matteson lead in Vegas

2006 champion, Troy Matteson, and a resurgent Chad Campbell share the lead at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, their 13 under par total leaving them one shot ahead of the runner up in this event last year, Matt Kuchar, Ryan Moore, Bob Heintz and Martin Laird.
Currently 132nd on the money list, Matteson needs something special over the remaining events of the season if he is to be back with full status on the PGA Tour in 2010. Matteson won this event when it was known as the Frys.com event in his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2006. 2009 however has been a struggle with only one top 20 in 28 starts.
Campbell’s eagle at his final hole of the day, the 9th, completed a round of 62 and gave him a share of the lead. Campbell has been a little quiet since his near miss at Augusta but did finish third in this event last year.
A brilliant opening round of 62 gave Matteson a share of the first day lead but Campbell was able to match it on day two to join him in the lead late in the day. Another to put together an impressive afternoon round on day two was Moore whose 63 moved him into a share of the third position.
Kuchar won two weeks ago on the PGA Tour at the Turning Stone resort Championship and is well placed to make amends for his playoff loss to Marc Turnesa last year.
Greg Chalmers leads the Australians in 14th position at 9 under and four shots from the lead, Nathan Green is one shot further back, Aaron Baddeley is 7 under, Mattie Goggin and Nick O’Hern 6 under and Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby at 5 under.
