Doyle leads WA Open
Australasian PGA Tour | 2009 WA Open | Round One | 22 Oct 2009
It was just another day at the office for seasoned professional Martin Doyle who began the 2009 John Hughes Geely WA Open at Cottesloe Golf Club with a seven-under, 65 earlier today.
Teeing-off at 7.40am, the 36 year-old Victorian took full advantage of the near perfect conditions firing eight birdies and one bogey to sit at the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of round one.
“I knew the opportunity was there to have a great round today,” said Doyle.
“I began with a birdie and then hit 14 out of the next 17 greens in regulation making a few putts on the way which is nice.”
“Its good to put yourself in this position. There are still three rounds to go but I don’t have to do anything spectacular, just make sure I play good solid golf and I will be up there come Sunday afternoon.”
Doyle holds a one-stroke lead from New Zealander Michael Hendry, while Tasmanian Clint Rice and Collier Park Public Golf Course Professional David Wilson finished the day on five-under.
Having made his way into the field through Monday qualifying, Wilson showed he was more than capable of mixing with some of Australia’s rising stars.
Wilson’s business partner Ross Metherell will be out to emulate the feat when the Handa Australian Senior Open starts tomorrow at Royal Perth Golf Club.
Play continues tomorrow at Cottesloe Golf Club from 6.50am.
Following 36-holes, the 156 player field will be reduced to the leading 50 professionals plus ties to battle it out over the weekend for the WA Open title and an opportunity to cement a position in the JBWere Masters field alongside world No. 1 Tiger Woods.
