The end is near at Frys.com Open

With just three more events on the 2009 PGA Tour schedule the Frys.com Open at the Tom Fazio designed Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale Arizona takes on a great deal of significance to those who need something special over the remaining few events of the year.
The tournament is being played for the third year although in its debut year in 2007 it was known as the Fry’s Electronics Open but it is essentially the same event. Mike Weir and Cameron Beckman are the two winners to date, Beckman defeating Kevin Sutherland in a playoff last year to win his second PGA Tour event, seven years after his first.
The favourite might just be the 2007 champion Weir who is playing solidly enough of late to be a factor on a golf course he clearly enjoys. Weir’s last victory was at this event in 2007 and there is every reason to believe he could win again. Weir also finished 4th last year after final round of 63.
Justin Leonard might not have done a lot this year but he has played well enough to improve on his only start in this event when 6th in 2007. He and Weir fought out a halved match in their recent Presidents Cup singles encounter and it would be fitting if they were both vying for the title on Sunday.
Can we give Tim Clark another chance? I think we can. He must surely win on the PGA Tour at some stage and last year played this golf course well on occasions including a second round of 64 before finishing 29th.
George McNeill likes this golf course having put together two very good finishes in this event. He is owed one for his near miss when losing in a playoff last week and this might give him the chance.
Ten Australians are in this week’s field. Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Greg Chalmers, Mathew Goggin, Nathan Green, Peter Lonard, Jarrod Lyle, James Nitties, "Nick O’Hern":/players/2820-nick-ohern and Aron Price with Lonard, Lyle and Price all having work to do if they are to enjoy PGA Tour playing privileges next year.
