Jonzon's win confirms immediate future

The Castello Masters Costa Azahar at the Club de Campo del Mediterráneo in Castellon in Spain has gone to Sweden’s Michael Jonzon, amazingly his first European Tour title since the 1997 Portugese Masters. Jonzon was at a point in his 2009 campaign that he needed something special over the final few weeks if he was to avoid yet another trip to Tour School for the 9th occasion.
The 37-year-old from Skovde holed a twenty foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole to end a roller coaster final day ride and deny Germany’s Martin Kaymer a fairytale return from injury and fellow Swede Christian Nilsson his second win of the season.
Jonzon led after day three and appeared to have the tournament in safe keeping when he made the turn in 31. A double bogey at the 15th and a bogey at the 17th brought him back to the field before the birdie at the last gave him victory.
Kaymer, whose foot was still a source of concern overcame the pain with a round of 67 to share second in his first event since the USPGA nine weeks ago. He remains in second position in the race to Dubai behind Lee Westwood.
Defending champion Sergio Garcia finished alone in fourth.
Robert Allenby finished as the leading Australian after showing good form ahead of this coming week’s Volvo World Match Play Championship when he shared 6th position with Soren Hansen.
Matthew Millar and Wade Ormsby finished 54th.
The European Tour plays the Volvo World Match Play in Casares in Spain and the jointly sanctioned Singapore Open.
