Viking Classic cancelled

The total cancellation of the Viking Classic on Saturday, due to the huge amount of surface water followed by further rain, places an unenviable burden on those who were hoping for the final two events of the year might just get them across the line in terms of retaining PGA Tour status of next season.

The course was already unplayable due to heavy rain in the Madison region of Mississippi before a further deluge on Friday evening, left tournament organisers with no alternative than to make the difficult decision to cancel the event altogether.

With the HSBC Champions event in China this coming week there was the possibility that play may have carried over into the early part of next week but there could be no guarantees that the course would dry out in time and as such the decision was made.

It is the first time since 1996 that a PGA Tour event has not produced a result. That year the AT&T Pebble Beach tournament was washed out due to rain

For those players on or near the 125 bubble this was a bitter blow. Instead of having two events to rescue their seasons they now have only one, which comes in two weeks time at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Orlando.
