Play suspended at QLD PGA

Australasian PGA Tour | 2009 Queensland PGA | Round One | 05 Nov 2009

Due to dangerous weather conditions round one of the 2009 Cellarbrations Queensland PGA Championship from City Golf Club, Toowoomba has been suspended and will recommence at 6.20am local time.

Early starters made the most of favourable weather conditions to set the pace on the opening day with four players sharing the clubhouse lead following a storm-interrupted day. Queensland trio Eddie Barr, Steve Bowditch and Chris Downes along with West Australian Steve Collins each shot six under-par rounds of 64. A large group of players will have the chance to match their efforts when they resume their first rounds tomorrow morning.

Tournament officials were forced to reorganise today’s playing schedule after 48 players were left with uncompleted rounds. Play was originally halted at 2.46 and resumed at 4.20 before darkness and rain caused play to be abandoned for the day at 5.15. Victorian Scott Laycock led the unfinished brigade, poised on 4-under par. The leading quartet peeled off a birdie blitz in an ominous signal ahead of the three remaining day’s play.

Bowditch gladly accepted his 64, but rued an opportunity lost to turn it into a “special” round.

“I played all right,” Bowditch said. “I drove the ball well and if you keep it on the fairways here you give yourself plenty of opportunities. But I could have left five or six shots out there today.”

“On most of the par fours I hit wedge into the green and from there it was a matter of getting puts to roll in which I didn’t do enough of today.”

“Hopefully the greens will quicken up a bit as the tournament goes on and if they do I think it’s possible for someone to go out and shoot a 59 around here.”

Barr’s hot round came on the heels of his successful year on the Queensland Sunshine Tour.

“I’m pretty happy with 64,” Barr said. “I hit eight birdies and two bogeys and made very few mistakes. The course played beautifully and it’s set up for a great tournament.”
