Scott Hend was out early firing a 6-under-par, 66 to take the morning lead at the Australian Open being played at the stunning NSW Golf Club south of Sydney.

Hend, who is currently 4th on the Asian Tour money list, ended the morning session a stroke ahead of the inform James Nitties, who sits at 5-under-par.

Nitties is seeking his first main Australian Tour win after retaining his 2010 PGA Tour playing rights in the US.

Last week at the New South Wales Open, Nitties finished runner-up behind Leigh McKechnie and in 2007 challenged for the Australian Open title going into the final day at The Australian Golf Club, to eventually finish in a tie for 5th.

Adam Scott is another player searching for his maiden Australian Tour win and opened strongly this morning to finish at 4-under-par along with Stephen Allan.

The afternoon players were greeted with freshening north-east winds, with Stuart Appleby making his move, birding five of his opening nine holes to move one behind Hend.
