Jones, Lutterus earn PGA Tour cards

Australians Matt Jones and David Lutterus have assured themselves of a return to the PGA Tour in 2010 when they became two of the lucky 25 players to graduate through the final stage of qualifying in Florida today.

Jones, from NSW, played collegiate golf in the US before playing his way onto the PGA Tour via the Nationwide Tour in 2007. He already had limited status on the PGA Tour via his 134th place finish there in 2009, but regained full status after finishing this week’s test strongly to be in 3rd position at the completion of 108 holes.

South Australian Lutterus, who played the PGA Tour in 2008 before losing status there, produced a magnificent final round of 64 improving from 28th to 8th. His rookie season was a disaster and he has played mini tour events and the occasional Nationwide event in 2009 before heading back to Tour School. He is still an untapped but significant talent.

Brisbane golfers Bronson La Cassie and Andrew Buckle missed out narrowly, La Cassie finishing just one shot out of the top 25 and Buckle fading from 18th with a final round of 75. Both will have full status on the Nationwide Tour in 2010.

David McKenzie finished 48th, Mark Hensby 64th, Phil Tataurangi 89th, Jamie Arnold and Won Joon Lee 104th, Ray Beaufils 108th and Bradley Iles 116th and will have either full or limited status on the Nationwide Tour in 2010.

The Medallist at the Tour School was Troy Merritt, who defeated veteran Jeff Maggert by one shot with Jones two further back.
