West Australian Rick Kulacz has followed up his excellent 4th place finish at the recent Africa Open with a great start to the Abu Dhabi Championship in the Middle East.
Kulacz’s second round of 63, a round which included 11 birdies, has given the 24 year old a one shot lead over Sergio Garcia, Peter Hanson and Shane Lowry in the €1.5 million star studded event.
Kulacz has played the Asian Tour for the last two years, winning twice during that period, but late in 2009 he earned his rights to play in Europe via the European Tour School, a final round of 64 in Spain ensuring he would be playing in Europe this season.
A former World Junior and Australian Junior Champion and winner of the New South Wales Open in 2006 as an amateur, is clearly developing into one of Australia’s brightest prospects.
Former champion Martin Kaymer, Rhys Davies and second season player Chris Wood share fifth two behind Kulacz.
The next best of the Australians to make the cut is Richard Green whose round of 65 moved him into a share of 8th. Brett Rumford and Marcus Fraser are 40th while one of the pre tournament favourites Geoff Ogilvy is struggling back in 49th position.
