Rumford leads in Qatar

West Australian Brett Rumford is the surprise leader at the halfway mark of the Qatar Masters, adding a second round of 69 to be one shot ahead of Welshman Bradley Dredge and at the head of a high class field.
Lee Westwood and Oliver Wilson were one shot further back at 7 under, Robert Karlsson and Niclas Fasth at 6 under while Charl Schwartzel and Peter Hanson are at 5 under. Schwartzel is seeking his third consecutive European Tour victory after two in South Africa in addition to a runner up finish two starts earlier.
Rumford struggled for much of 2009 recording only one top ten in world golf. The played the PGA Tour in 2008 after earning his card via the Tour School late in 2007, a year in which he won the Omega European Masters. His first venture to the US was unsuccessful but he now regrets his decision to not return to the USPGA Tour Q School, recognising that the first season on the PGA Tour can be very difficult.
Rumford will need to be at his very best to hold off one of the strongest fields ever assembled for this event.
New Zealander Mark Brown is in 32nd position, with Richard Green and Danny Lee the only other two Australasians to make the cut. Lee made his first cut in his last five events
