Karlsson confirms return in Qatar

Sweden’s Robert Karlsson made a huge step in his return to the elite of world golf by winning the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters by three shots over defending champion Alvaro Quiros.

The winner of the European Tour’s order of Merit in 2008 had several months off in 20009 as he recovered from a debilitating and career threatening eye injury but since his return at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October he has been working his way to top form.

A runner up finish to Edoardo Molinari in Japan in November signalled that he had made an almost full recovery and this week’s victory against a world class field confirmed such.

Twelve months ago Karlsson was the world number six ranked golfer but by year’s end he has slipped to 27th and leading into this week he was placed 31st. Given the strength of this week’s field he will be on his way back with a bullet.

Defending champion Alvaro Quiros birdied his final three holes to finish alone in second and to move ahead of Lee Westwood who emerged as a threat to the winner before a late bogey cost him any chance of victory. Westwood shared third with Australian Brett Rumford.

New Zealanders Danny Lee and Mark Brown finished 45th while Australian Richard Green finished 49th.

The European Tour now moves south to Dubai for the Dubai Desert Classic.
