Quinn wins on return to Nationwide Tour

44-year-old Fran Quinn has won his fourth Nationwide Tour title with a two shot win over Brian Smock at the Panama Claro Open.

Quinn actually has PGA Tour status having finished 25th on the Nationwide Tour in 2009 but unable to get starts in events like this week’s Waste Management event in Phoenix, he has taken the opportunity to build continuity in his game by playing in Panama.

The plan has certainly worked and despite a poor start this season to his first PGA Tour campaign since 1992, he will head back to the PGA Tour, when he next gains a start, with his game and mind in much better shape.

Quinn will not get a start at next week’s Honda Classic and may instead decide to play in the Nationwide Tour event in Colombia.

After a third round of 62 had given him the lead heading into today’s final round, Quinn started slowly with two early bogeys but steadied over the final nine holes to hold out Smock who finished strongly to finish alone in second position.

The best of the Australians were Gavin Coles and Alistair Presnell who could only manage 42nd in what was a disappointing week for the large Australasian contingent.

Adam Bland was 53rd.

The Nationwide Tour now plays the Bogota Open in Colombia.
