Sherratt eyes back-to-back titles

Australian Mens Amateur Tour | 2010 Riversdale Cup | General | 03 Mar 2010

The inform Jordan Sherratt is seeking to become only the second golfer in the last 20 years to win back-to-back Riversdale Cups when play gets under-way at the Riversdale Golf Club this Friday.

Robert Allenby is the only other golfers to have done it in this period, having won the international championship event in 1990 and 1991.

The Riversdale Cup is the national’s second oldest amateur golf tournament and is a must-play championship for selection into the Australian team.

A win will see Sherratt gain entry into British Amateur Championship, as well as points for entry into the European Amateur Championship and towards the Mark H McCormack Medal. The Medal is presented annually by the R&A to the leading player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Only six other players in Riversdale’s 115 year history have won back-to-back titles, including the legendary Kevin (The Dart) Hartley who twice won the Cup three times on end between 1963 and 65 and 1976 and 78.

Sherratt, of South Australia, goes into tournament with the 2010 Master of the Amateurs Championship under his belt and a fourth place in recent Lake Macquarie Championship, which was won by Victoria’s Kieran Pratt, who set a tournament record of 21 under par to win the event.

Both will be among golfers from 11 countries teeing off in tomorrow’s Australian Men’s Foursomes Championship at Riversdale as a lead-up to the Riversdale Cup.

Thirty international players from the USA, England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, New Zealand, China, Korea, Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore are in both fields.

Australia’s top ranked Royal & Ancient listed player Matt Jager, of Western Australia who is rated 11th in the world, is also in the fields along withNew Zealand’s top ranked amateur Ryan Fox, the son of former All Back, Grant Fox.

Two-time Arizona state champion Peter Croonquist; England’s 2009 Strada Hampshire Open winner Neil Raymond; and 2007 British Boys’ championship runner-up Fraser Fotheringham, of Scotland are also in this year’s Cup field.
