Camilo Villegas put the rigours of a demanding week behind him when he easily accounted for a quality field at the Honda Classic in West Palm Beach.
Four days earlier Villegas played the pro am at the Bogota Open in Colombia in order to ensure that inaugural event had the best promotion possible then jumped on a plane to Florida.
An opening hole bogey on day one could not stop Villegas from a first round of 66 and he would continue to lead almost throughout. Through ten holes today he had established a massive six shot lead and although the week’s activities began to take their toll over the closing stages he was still able to win by five over Anthony Kim.
For Villegas it was his third PGA Tour victory and will move him to the top of the PGA Tour’s money list in 2010.
Justin Rose birdied five of his first six holes in today’s final round to set the base for a round of 64 and he jumped 20 places to finish alone in third position just ahead of fellow countryman Paul Casey and Vijay Singh.
Nathan Green appeared headed for a top five finish with four holes to play but he fell victim to the notorious Bear Trap dropping four shots in two of the three holes that make up the tough stretch of finishing holes on the Champions Course.
Green eventually finished as the leading Australian in 12th position just one shot ahead of Marc Leishman who was 17th. Matt Jones was 40th while, John Senden was 50th, Stuart Appleby and David Lutterus were 67th.
The PGA Tour will have two events this coming week; the World Golf Championship event is played at Doral in Miami and the Puerto Rico open will be played in that country.
