South Africans Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel lead into the final round of the WGC-CA Championship at the Doral Resort and Spa in Miami but their advantage is just one over Padraig Harrington.
Another shot further back in Robert Allenby whose birdie from 7 feet at the final hole of the day at the Blue Monster layout might make a significant difference in tomorrow’s showdown.
Schwartzel, who lead after an opening round of 67 only to lose the lead to Els in yesterday’s second round, was quickly out of the blocks today with four birdies in his first six holes, in fact he birdied five holes in his first eight on day three.
Schwartzel led briefly through the middle of the front nine but after a slow start Els round began to build momentum and by the turn he was one ahead. Els moved further ahead when he birdied the par five 10th but a short missed putt at the 13th and Schwartzel’s late birdie saw the pair finish at 12 under and they will face off into tomorrow’s final round.
Harrington joined the South Africans in the lead when he birdied the 16th and 17th holes but a bogey at the dangerous last cost him a share of the lead, He is however well positioned to win his first significant event in more than eighteen months.
Compared to his roller coaster opening two rounds, Allenby’s third round was pretty straight forward with just three birdies and two bogeys but he is still well placed to win for the first time in the US since 2001.
John Senden is the next best of the Australians in 11th position at 6 under and six behind the lead, while Alistair presnell and Adam Scott share 24th position at 2 under.
