Matt Jager secured his first Australian national title winning the Australian Amateur Stroke championship with a five stroke margin over Luke Bleumink and Jin Jeong at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth.

Jager fired rounds of 65-70-71-70 to finish at 12-under-par and in the process moved back inside the World’s top-10 after falling back to be ranked 11th following last week’s Riversdale Cup in Melbourne.

Taking full advantage of playing in his home State of Western Australia, Jager played majestic golf throughout the Australian Amateur Stroke championship never relinquishing the lead after his stellar opening tournament low round of 7-under 65 at Mt Lawley Golf Club on Thursday.

Today’s win is Jager’s forth main amateur title, after winning back-to-back Federal Amateur championships in 2008-09 and the 2009 New Zealand Amateur Championship with a 6&5 victory over South Africa’s, Nicol Van Wyk, at Titirangi Golf Club last April in Auckland.

Jager starts the number 1 seed for the Australian Amateur championship proper and will play John Yim in the first round of elimination match play in his campaign to progress through four rounds to make Wednesday’s 36-hole final to be played at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.

Luke Bleumink, winner of the 2008 Victorian Amateur Stoke championship, fired rounds of 73-68-68-72 to finish 7-under-par along with 2010 Riversdale Cup champion, South Korea’s Jin Jeong. Bleumink faces a tough assignment in his opening match play encounter against New Zealand’s, Ben Campbell, while Jin Jeong meets Allan Haughie.

Ryan Woodward, the third round co-leader with Jager, finished in 4th position at 4-under-par and a stroke ahead of Jordan Sherratt. Kieran Pratt and Bryden Macpherson finished in a tie for 6th position at 2-under to position themselves well in the match play draw.

Pratt, a multiple winner this season in Australia with the Dunes Medal, the Victorian Amateur and the Lake Macquarie Amateur, will play against local Mark Varela. Macpherson is scheduled to meet Anthony Houston in their first round encounter.

The fall of the draw for the elimination match play section has resulted in some interesting matches for Monday’s opening round.

Ryan McCarthy the number 8 seed is matched against NSW Amateur Stroke champion, Michael Williams, in one of the harder matches in the upper-half of the draw. New Zealand’s, Ryan Fox will meet Tim Hart, also in the upper-half of the draw which also includes Jager, and Sherratt.

The lower-half of the draw has Pratt, Bleumink, Macpherson and Jeong, making no real easy pathways to Wednesday’s final.
