Low scoring on day one in Chengdu

The opening event of the 2010 OneAsia Tour season, the Luxehills Chengdu Open at the Luxehills Country Club in Chengdu in Sichuan Province in China, began today in coolish and drizzly weather and it is a local hero who leads the way.

Liang Wen-chong, China’s best golfer and the leading world ranked player in this field, started in the afternoon field on day one, birdied six of his first eight holes, eventually finished with a round of 8 under 64 and leads by one over Korean golfer Ho-sung Choi and by two over American David Oh.

Liang whose last win came at the One Asia Tour’s Midea China Classic in October 2009, gets the opportunity tomorrow morning to extend that lead when he gets the benefit of morning conditions on day two.

The 31 year old Liang, from Zhongshan is a class act having won two Asian Tour events and led the Asian Tour money list in 2007. In that season he also became just the second Chinese golfer to win a European Tour event when he claimed the Singapore Masters. That he is the leading world ranked player in this field speaks for itself.

36 year old Choi, who plays with success on the Korean Tour, put his solid round down to the inclusion of a new putter in his bag.

American born Korean, Oh played collegiate golf at the University of Southern California but he has been a regular in Asia in recent years, more especially on the Korean Tour.

In a share of 4th position and only three from the lead are leading Australians Terry Pilkadaris, Ashley Hall and Scott Arnold along with Korean Bio Kim and China’s Gui Ming Liao.

81 players broke par on a day one on a golf course where low scoring was the norm.
