Sweet success for Scrivener at Mandurah

Jason Scrivener’s one stroke win over Matt Stieger at today’s Mandurah Easter Open is sweet in more ways than one.

Scrivener’s 6-under-par total not only delivered the talented 20-year-old his first National Trial title on home soil, it’s rebooted his confidence to move to the next level following what can be described as a down period plagued with injury and uncertainty.

It was a sentimental win for the world number 67 which was achieved in front of his home club at Mandurah Country Club in Perth. The title went Scrivener’s way following rounds of 73-70-69-70.

“I’m stoked to say the least,” said an elated Scrivener following today’s round.

“I kind of felt that it’s harder to win at home, yet it is certainly more satisfying than winning away. It was my third round this morning that moved me into position to win here and it’s great to be back playing the way that I am and to win my first National Trial event at Mandurah, it’s something special.”

Defending champion and overnight leader Daniel Beckmann finished in outright 3rd position at 4-under-par, with closing rounds of 75-69 after Beckmann opened with dual rounds of 70.

Beckmann finished a stroke ahead of Jin Jeong who finished in 5th position at 3-under-par.

The win in Perth for Scrivener comes off his earlier victory at The Australian Cup in January, where he defeated the in-formed Kieran Pratt on the first play-off hole, after the pair finished at 3-under for the tournament. It also adds to Scrivener’s run of titles that include the 2009 Western Australian Amateur and New South Wales Medal.

Irrespective of these earlier achievements, Scrivener was simply rejoicing claiming his first National Trial event and winning it in front of his local supporters and was clearly pleased with today’s outcome.

“This is my first National Title win and I’m simply feeling wrapped.”

“After the disappointment last week at the Australian Amateur, it’s great to get a win like this and it gives me plenty of confidence moving forward.”

Scrivener certainly is a talented player, the consistency he’s shown in main Australian amateur events since progressing from the junior ranks in 2008 after winning the 2007 Australian Junior Championship, is testament to this. Further to rebound the way he has since the obvious disappointment at the Australian Amateur Championships, reveals the steely resolve which Scrivener possesses.

There are no apparent weaknesses, he both drives and putts the ball well. For the last two seasons Scrivener pressured Australasia’s best, today’s win will hopefully be the springboard that he’s after to take his game to the next level and improve on his current world ranking of 67, which is not reflective of his true standing on the international amateur stage.

“Recently, it has been difficult with being away from the game with injury and trying to get back in,” says Scrivener.

“The win today gives me the mental confidence to do well more than anything else. That’s important to me and it’s just great to have this happen here at Mandurah, where I’ve played most of my golf.”

The win at Mandurah was clearly a sweet victory in more ways than one for one of our most talented and promising young amateurs.

Scrivener is a name we will be reading more about in years to come and hopefully winning the Mandurah Easter Open will have the desired springboard effect that he so rightly deserves to have.

Scrivener has his confidence back and moves now onto the Golf South Australian Amateur Classic being played at Glenelg Golf Club starting Thursday in search of another title and it becomes very much a case of “watch this space” for the name Scrivener.
