After carding an opening round 3-under-par 68 at Muirfield Golf Club yesterday to be in a share of 5th position in the British Amateur, Kieran Pratt scored a second round of 71 at North Berwick for a 3-under-par total to qualify for the match-play section of the championship.

Pratt, a three-time winner this season back in Australia and currently ranked 14th in the world, took honours of the first day’s lowest round at Muirfield to position himself well at the British Amateur in Scotland and finished in a tie for 11th position, four strokes behind the leader, England’s Tommy Fleetwood.

Spain’s Emilio Cuartero, will be Pratt’s opponent in Wednesday’s second round of the championship at Muirfield.

Cuartero finished the 36-hole stroke component of the tournament at 1-under-par and in a share of 27th position. The Spaniard was runner-up recently at the Spanish International Medal and is currently ranked 392 in the world

Jin Jeong also opened strongly in his first British Amateur with a 1-under-par 70 at Muirfield and followed that with a second round, 71, at North Berwick to make the top-64 for match-play with a score of 1-under-par.

Jeong will play Finland’s Toni Hakula, who finished the stroke round at 3-under-par and in a tie for 11th.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood, beaten finalist at Turnberry in the 2008 British Amateur Championship, posted a flawless round of 65 at North Berwick to finish two shots clear of the field with a 7-under-par total. Formby’s Ian Winstanley, reigning British Boys Amateur Champion, Tom Lewis, and the highest-ranked Scot James Byrne shared second place at five-under-par.

New Zealand’s Ben Campbell is having a stellar championship here in Scotland, making the top-64 easily with even par 71 at Muirfield followed with an impressive 67 at North Berwick to finish at 4-under-par and in a tie for 5th position.

Campbell, runner-up in the 2010 Australian Amateur and winner this year on the New Zealand Tour at the Tauranga Open, will play Bolivia’s, Sebastian Maclean in tomorrow’s second match-play round.

Despite opening with a promising 1-over-par, 72, at Muirfield, Bryden Macpherson missed the top-64 finishing with a round of 72 at North Berwick to be in a tie for 74th position. Jordan Zunic also missed the match-play segment after opening with a 76 at North Berwick despite following with a respectable 72 at Muirfield.

Matt Jager’s British Amateur championship has ended after the world number 7 fired an opening round of 6-over-par, 77, at Muirfield, and followed with a 72 at North Berwick, resulting in the dual Australian and New Zealand Amateur Champion finishing in a tie for 185th position.
