Australian golfer Stephen Allan is happy just to be at Pebble beach. After his struggles to maintain status on the US PGA and Nationwide Tours, Allan has spent the last few months playing whatever he can in Australasia and Asia and has begun to again display the game that saw him win an Australian Open and play the USPGA Tour for several seasons.
“I have been playing quite solidly all year without really putting any low rounds together, said Allan. “I have had a couple of good finishes in One Asia events and then played well to qualify for a Nationwide Tour event recently and even though I missed the cut I felt like I played ok.”
“It’s just great to be here especially without a card to play anywhere it is fantastic to be playing in one of the big tournaments.”
“In theory I am hoping to get starts in Nationwide Tour events by qualifying and hopefully get back on that Tour. I will head to Indonesia in two weeks time to play the One Asia Tour event there and then work out a schedule from there. I will probably continue to try and access the Nationwide Tour and play the One Asia events where I can.”
Allan lives in Scottsdale and came over here to try and qualify for the Nationwide event. He took his chances on getting a start at the US Open via final qualifying in Columbine in Colorado. He finished tied for first there with one other and with only two spots available it was a huge effort.
“I love what I see here this week. Usual US Open, narrow fairways, thick rough and firm greens and it will be a great test but the kind of test I like.”
