Aussies battle at UK Amateur

Australia’s five representatives will have to battle hard to make the matchplay section of the British Amateur being played in Ganton, Yorkshire.

Jessica Speechley is the best placed on 3 over 76 and in equal 24th position after the first round of the 36 hole qualifying stage. The leader, Italian Giulia Molinaro, shot an impressive 3 under 70 to be two shots ahead of the chasing pack.

Queensland’s Ashley Ona is in a tie for 49th on 5 over 78 while Justine Lee will have to shoot a solid score tomorrow to make the final 64 qualifiers, sitting on equal 70th position on 7 over 80.

It was a very warm day at the Ganton Golf Club, but the game of Victorian Stacey Keating was unusually cold, two birdies ruined by nine bogeys and a double bogey in her 9 over round of 82. The 23-year-old is back in the field at T96th but has the talent to force her way through to the match play stage tomorrow.

The fifth Australian at the amateur, Stacey Shanahan had a very tough day at the office, posting a 15 over round of 88.

The British Amateur is one of the world’s leading amateur events. Only one Australian has won the title, Sydney’s Edwina Kennedy in 1978, while Lindsey Wright and Wendy Doolan went close, both losing in the final.
