Despite finishing with a qualifying score, Australia’s Justine Lee has missed out on a spot in the matchplay section of the British Amateur Championship.
The top 64 players went through and even though Lee finished with a two round score of 12 over 158, the same as 14 other girls, a new countback system meant Lee was the unlucky one, finishing 65th by virtue of her second round 5 over 78.
Previously a playoff has determined the final qualifiers.
But in good news from the Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire, AIS National Squad members, Jessica Speechley qualified in 54th place with a final two round score of 11 over 157, while Stacey Keating fought back today with a three over round of 76 to qualify in 62nd position.
It was a great effort by Keating after yesterday’s disappointing 9 over 82 which had her standing 96th.
Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall earned the no 1 qualifying position thanks to an impressive 3 under 70 today. The runner up to Anna Nordqvist in the 2008 UK Amateur has had an outstanding season, winning this year’s NCAA women’s title representing Oklahoma Sate University.
Her twin sister Jacqueline qualified in 53rd position after a two round score of 11 over 157.
Australia’s other representatives, Ashley Ona finished 82nd with a two round score of 13 over 159, while Stacey Shanahan ended her UK amateur in 138th position after shooting 28 over.
In tomorrow’s Match play, Jessica Speechley will take on England’s Charlotte Ellis, while Stacey Keating meets Italian third seed Giulia Molinaro.
