Goydos joins elite group with 59

Paul Goydos today became just the fourth player in PGA Tour history to break 60 when he compiled 12 birdies in a round of 59 on day one of the John Deere Classic at the TPC Deere Run in Slivis, Illinois.

Goydos joins Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval as the only players to have accomplished the feat on the PGA Tour although others have matched and in fact bettered that score on other tours worldwide.

When he headed for the 10th tee today, Goydos had done well over the opening nine holes with four birdies but just over two hours later he had added another eight birdies and completed a final nine of 28 and signed for his 59.

Goydos holed a seven foot putt at the final hole to join the select group. “That’s the most nervous I’ve been over a putt, probably,” he said after his round. “It felt like when I brought the putter back and made a pretty good stroke, couldn’t hit the putt any more solid and the ball couldn’t have gone more in the centre of the hole with a laser on it.”

“I’ve been scuffling quite severely for the last four months or so with my game, finding ways to play poorly. I’ve been very good at playing poorly now for the last 10 tournaments or so.”

“But I thought my putting was getting a little bit better. Last week I putted pretty good, especially on the short putts, inside eight feet a lot of good putts. I thought my game was getting a little bit better also. But today was, you know – well, today was a nuclear bomb. I don’t know where it came from. If I knew that, I wouldn’t be able to touch it.”

Despite his amazing round, Goydos leads by only one over the defending champion Steve Stricker who late in the day birdied his final three holes for a round of 60.
