Langer wins, Senior 3rd at Senior Open

Germany’s Bernhard Langer has survived a determined challenge from Corey Pavin to win the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie in Scotland and claim his first major championship in the senior ranks.

Langer and Pavin separated themselves from the field on the tough and demanding Carnoustie layout and although Langer took a three shot lead into the final round Pavin would just not go away.

When Pavin birdied the 11th there was just one shot in it but a bogey at the 16th gave Langer some breathing room and he was afforded the luxury of being able to lay up and take bogey at the last and still win by one.

Peter Senior birdied three of his first four holes in round four and appeared at that stage as if he might challenge the leaders but the momentum slowed. He was round in 68 to finish in a very meritorious share of third position with Jay Don Blake, Russ Cochran and Fred Funk. That group finished three shot behind second placed Pavin.

The US$90,000 Senior earns for his third place finish moves him to 13th on the 2010 Champions Tour money list with earnings of US$495,000 and all but guarantees him of full status in 2011.
