Bleumink still in touch at Porter Cup

Luke Bleumink remains six strokes from the leaders at the Porter Cup in Lewiston with the Victorian at 2-under-par following rounds of 64-74.

Bleumink headed into the second round at Niagara Falls Country Club the overnight leader, but rounds of 67 and 65 from Russell Henley and Harry Rudolph III respectively moved the Americans to be at 8-under-par and leading the tournament, three ahead of another American, Nate McCoy.

For Bleumink the second round a day of minimising errors as he attempted to consolidate his standing in the field after his fine 6-under-par opening round..

“It wasn’t the best of days today but the way I was striking probably wasn’t as bad as the score suggests,” said Bleumink.

“I made a few costly errors out there with an 8 down the 12th, but other than that it was ok. I’ll see if I can get it back tomorrow.”

British Amateur Champion, Jin Jeong, is the next best placed Aussie opening with a 1-under-par 69 and following that with a second round 70 to be in a share of 15th place.

A stroke behind Jeong in a tie for 20th position is Jason Scrivener and Bryden Macpherson, both at even par after rounds of 72-68 and 70-70 respectively.

“I played really solid, said Macpherson.

“The greens are improving every day. So I’m really looking forward to tomorrow. I’m hitting it straight which is important here and all I need is to have some putts drop and we’ll see what happens.”

Jordan Sherratt is the next best placed Australian behind Macpherson and Scrivener with the Master of the Amateurs Champion currently in a tie for 25th position after rounds of 73-68. Ryan McCarthy is starting to make his move with a second round 69 to add to his opening 71 to be in a tie for 38th position along with Tarquin Macmanus.

McCarthy continues to improve in every tournament here in the US and a low round is due for the Tasmanian.

Kieran Pratt, Daniel Beckmann and Matt Jager will need to make their moves during the third as they all are currently well down the leader board at Niagara Falls Country Club. Brendan Smith has withdrawn from the tournament after opening with a 6-over-par, 76.
