McCarthy moves with 65 at Porter Cup

Ryan McCarthy made his move during the third round of the Porter Cup with a 5-under-par, 65, to jump twenty-five positions from his opening round and be in a tie for 17th position at 2-under-par, six behind current leaders, American’s David Chung and Russell Henley.
McCarthy has fired rounds of 74-69-65 and is the best of the Australians.
The 65 today from McCarthy equalled the low third round at the Porter Cup and has the Tasmanian set for another fine finish in a major amateur championship in the US.
“My game hasn’t felt as solid as previous weeks,” said McCarthy following today’s round.
“I just found a way to score well today. I was staying positive throughout the round, which has been my main focus in these events. It’s important to stay in the moment, playing each shot on its merits. That’s being my strategy and I’ll keep that focus tomorrow in the final round.”
McCarthy is at ease with the Niagara Falls Country Club as it reminds him a lot of courses back home in his native Tasmania.
“The course is almost identical to the course that I grew up on,” he says.
“It’s the same grasses and green speed. That’s very comforting to know that I know I’m suited to the conditions. Now it’s a matter that I just have to believe that I can do well tomorrow and post a similar number.”
Jason Scrivener continues to have a fine US tour this season and is currently in a tie for 24th position at 1-under-par following rounds of 70-70-69 to be the next best placed Australian behind McCarthy. Scrivener’s consistency in scoring under or around par this tour is continuing to show results for the Western Australian and again he’s having another great US tournament, doing his preparation for the US Amateur later this month no harm.
First round leader Luke Bleumink has moved back into a tie for 30th position following rounds of 64-74-72, to be with Jordan Sherratt at even-par after the Master of the Amateurs Champion fired rounds of 70-71-69.
Bryden Macpherson is at plus-1 with rounds of 72-68-71 to be in a tie for 34th position along with British Amateur Champion, Jin Jeong, who’s fired rounds of 69-70-72.
Daniel Beckmann is at plus-4 for the tournament and in a tie for 45th position with rounds of 72-73-69 along with Tarquin Macmanus, after the Arizona State collegiate player fired rounds of 74-69-71.
Matt Jager has not been able to get his form going and has struggled in his opening US tournament for the season to be sitting in a tie for 76th position after rounds of 70-76-81.
