Victorian golfer Alistair Presnell staked his claim for PGA Tour status in 2011 with an impressive third place finish at the Nationwide Tour’s Cox Classic presented by Lexus.
The US$42,050 Presnell earned for his week takes his season total on the Nationwide Tour to US$114,000 and will move him to the edge of the all important top 25.
Nine birdies in his first 15 holes in today’s final round at the Champions Run course in Omaha had given Presnell a share of the lead but with so many scoring opportunities awaiting those behind he needed to finish his round off strongly if he as to have a chance of taking the first prize of. Unfortunately he was not able to do that but his third place finish has enhanced his chances of PGA Tour status.
Earlier this year Presnell went oh so close to breaking 60 at the Victorian PGA Championship when he recorded a final round of 60 at the Sandhurst golf club to win that event. A few week later he put together what is likely his most significant performance in the game (2009 Moonah Classic win included) when he finished 6th at the WGC CA event at Doral.
The winner of this week’s event was American Martin Piller who is best known in Australasia for finishing runner up to Alex Prugh at the 2009 Michael Hill New Zealand Open. His win this week guarantees him of PGA Tour status for the first time in 2011. It was Piller’s second victory of the season and his career on the Nationwide Tour.
Scott Gardiner was the next best of the Australasians in 11th position with Adam Bland 15th.
