Tamworth’s Julia Boland has fired an even par round of 72 to be tied 16th after the first round of the US Amateur Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It was a solid start for the 24-year-old with the top 64 following tomorrow’s second round qualifying for the match play stage.

Boland will have her work cut out to win the medallist honours, with Rachel Rohanna a hot favourite, leading the tournament at 7 under 65. The record-breaking round has the 19-year-old three shots ahead of Tennessee’s Brooke Pancake.

The only other Australian in the 156-player field, Hannah Thomson, who attends Florida State University, is in a tie for 89th position on five over 77.
