California’s Gabriella Then has defeated Tamworth’s Julia Boland 3 & 1 in the first round of the US Amateur at the Charlotte Country Club in North Carolina.

“I played pretty solid but my girl just kept firing them in at the pin all day and holed some pivotal putts,” Boland said.

The 24-year-old Australian lost in last year’s first round and was hoping to improve on that performance this week. She has spent that past year as a student at the Texas A& M University where she spearheaded the team to an 11th placing at the NCAA championships.

The US Amateur number one seed, Rachel Rohanna advanced through to the second round, so too did co-medalists, Jaclyn Sweeney and Erynne Lee.

The only upset was the loss on the 20th hole by tournament fourth seed, Brooke Pancake to North Carolina’s Corinne Carr.
