LPGA plays CN Canadian Open

BY Bruce Young | LPGA Tour | 2010 Canadian Women's Open | Preview | 25 Aug 2010

The LPGA Tour moves from Oregon to Winnipeg in Canada for this week’s CN Canadian Women’s Open.

The tournament is being played at the St Charles Country Club, a golf course that has been blessed with the architectural genius of Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross and Alister MacKenzie which should in itself ensure its quality.

The course has played host to several significant events in the past including on one occasion this particular tournament, the Du Maurier Classic during its time as a major on the LPGA Tour, the PGA Tour’s Canadian Open and the Canada Senior Open.

The reigning champion of this event is Suzann Pettersen who defeated a five way line-up for second at the Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Alberta.

The dominant player in women’s golf in 2010, Ai Miyazato, is in the field seeking her 6th victory of the season but so too is Na Yeon Choi who, despite winning on only one occasion this season, is within striking distance of the Japanese star on the Money List. Choi’s consistency in 2010 has ben simply stunning and if she was to break through for win number two this week then it would be well deserved.

Miyazato is joined by all four of the other leading five in women’s golf, Cristie Kerr, Jiyai Shin, Yani Tseng and the defending champion.

The Australian challenge is headed by last year’s joint runner up Karrie Webb but Katherine Hull, who broke through for her first LPGA Tour victory in this event in 2008, is also in the field. They will be joined by Michelle Ellis, Lindsey Wright, Rachel Hetherington, Sarah Kemp, Anna Rawson and Sarah Jane Smith.
