Ryan McCarthy produced a stellar second 3-under-par 69 at the The Home Course at Chambers Bay to finish in a tie for 7th after the qualification stroke rounds at the US Amateur Championship being played just north of Seattle.
McCarthy had opened with a 3-over-par 74 at the harder Chambers Bay Golf Course in yesterday’s opening qualification round, but a peerless bogey-free second round resulted in the 2009 Tasmanian Open and Amateur champion making the desired top-64 to set up an opening elimination match play against American, Daniel Bowden.
Bowden, ranked 761st in the world compared to McCarthy who is currently 68th, has as his best result in a main amateur tournament to date a tied 6th at this year’s South Carolina State Amateur. McCarthy this season here in the US had played solid golf to record numerous top-20 finishes at the Porter Cup, Southern Amateur and Dogwood Invitational. The Australian should start as favourite in the opening round match.
McCarthy, who is playing in his first US Amateur, was the only Australian to survive the low 64’s and ties.
Jason Scrivener narrowly missed the plus-6 cut mark finishing at 7-over-par and in a tie for 59th.
Matthew Smith, who last year at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, progressed to the top-32, finished at plus-8 and in a tie for 94th, while Jin Jeong’s chances of becoming the first player since Robert Dickson in 1967 to win both the US Amateur and British Amateur in the same year were slashed after the Korean born Melbourne native fired rounds of 74-79 to be four off the pace at 10-over-par and in a tie for 118th.
Jeff Wilson, 47, captured medalist honours for the fifth time at a US Amateur Championship with a 36-hole stroke-play total of 7-under-par 136. Byeong-Hun An, the 2009 US Amateur champion, advanced to the match play at 4-over-par 147.
Other notables to advance include Morgan Hoffmann at plus-1 and in a tie for 13th, David Chung, a two-time winner here in the US this season with the Porter Cup and Western Amateur, finishing also at plus-1, Kevin Tway, the Oklahoma power house collegiate player at plus-2 and in a tie for 24th and Peter Uihlein at plus-3.
The second round of stroke play was completed late Tuesday, but there will be a 16-for-6 playoff for the final few spots in the match-play bracket, starting at 7.15am local time Wednesday. The first round of match play will then follow.
