Win number two for Wie

Michelle Wie claimed LPGA Tour victory number two with an impressive three shot win at the CN Canadian Women’s Open in Winnipeg.

The controversial but highly talented 20 year old recorded a final round of 70 to defeat Kristy McPherson, Jee Young Lee, Ji Yai Shin and Suzann Pettersen at the St Charles Country Club, adding this title to her victory in last year’s Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

Wie led throughout after her opening round of 65 although she was joined in the lead at the 54 hole mark by Ji Yai Shin. Shin could not build any momentum in today’s final round and three consecutive birdies in the middle of her back nine gave Wie the cushion she needed to cruise to the line. A chip in at the 15th proved crucial in turning a possible bogey into a birdie.

Rachel Hetherington led the Australians, which was all rather ironic as she announced a few hours later that she would retire from tournament golf.

Hetherington finished in 24th position but displayed during Saturday’s third round of 66 that she still has the game but perhaps not the motivation after a skateboard accident earlier in the year curtailed her 2010 campaign.

Sarah Jane Smith finished 30th, Katherine Hull 37th, Sarah Kemp 49th and Karrie Webb 60th.
