Victoria has raced away to an early lead after the first day of the Women’s Interstate Team Matches at the McLeod Golf Club in Queensland.
Led by current Australian Amateur Champion Stacey Keating, the Victorians were too strong, defeating Tasmania 6 matches to 2.
Queensland is just half a match behind Victoria after their 5½ to 2½ defeat of South Australia, while Western Australia squeezed past defending champions, New South Wales 4½ to 3½.
It was always going to be a tough assignment for the New South Wales team after they were down 2½ matches to a ½ after the morning’s foursomes event.
The Gladys Hay Memorial Cup also saw the welcome return from a wrist injury for Western Australia’s national squad member Whitney Hillier. The 19-year-old won both her matches, a 7 and 6 defeat of Adriana Brent in the afternoon singles match particularly impressive.
If NSW is to keep its hopes of winning a third consecutive title alive, they must defeat Victoria tomorrow while in the other matches, Western Australia takes on South Australia and Queensland meets Tasmania.
