Home town advantage proved an added bonus as the Queensland men recorded a superb 9-2 win over South Australia in the opening round of the Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches at Oxley Golf Club.
The Queenslanders had convincing wins in the morning foursomes before delivering more of the same in the afternoon singles to take top spot on the leaderboard.
Tim Hart, at one stage squared with SA’s Jordan Sherratt, birdied holes 9-13 to take a commanding lead and won the match 6 & 4. Keperra Bowl champion Gavin Fairfax endured a solid battle with Max McCardle before holing his bunker shot for eagle on the sixth to win 1up.
Victoria sits just behind Queensland following an impressive 8½ to 2½ win over Tasmania. Victoria secured the advantage with a 4-0 lead from the foursomes and a 6 & 5 win to Nathan Holman and 4 & 3 win to Ashley Umbers maintained Victoria’s lead. Kieran Pratt and Ryan McCarthy, who both recently returned from the United States, fought out a squared match.
New South Wales is in third place following their 7½ to 3½ win over Western Australia. Brett Drewitt recorded the biggest win of the singles with a 6 & 5 victory over Gavin Reed.
