The LPGA Tour this week plays its second to last event of the 2010 season with the staging of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club in Guadalajara, Mexico.
This week’s tournament is followed in three week’s time by the LPGA Tour Championship in Florida which brings the regular tour season to a close.
The tournament is being played for the third consecutive year with Angela Stanford and Michelle Wie the previous winners. Wie, who will defend her victory this week, broke through for her maiden win on the LPGA Tour with her two shot victory over Paula Creamer last year.
Only the leading world ranked player from the leading ten in the Rolex Rankings, Ji Yai Shin, is missing from the 36 player field, ensuring an outstanding contest.
Yani Tseng, Cristie Kerr, Na Yeon Choi, Suzann Pettersen, Ai Miyazato, Michelle Wie, Song Hee Kim, In Kyung Kim and Paula Creamer are those nine players from the top ten.
Tournament host Ochoa is in the field and, although now officially retired from tournament golf, she gave an indication two weeks ago in China that contention this week might not be completely beyond her.
She won US$1.28 million in a pro celebrity event although it is hard to line up the standard of that field compared to the in-form and tournament sharpened field she will face this week.
Australia is represented by Karrie Webb and Katherine Hull.
